Music Vault & Release System
14 years of Guitar Grimoire progressions in all 12 keys. Five songs in a sitting. The talent was never the problem — the container was.
The one thing to understand before anything else: you write it, you play it, you record it in Logic. That means you own 100% of the composition AND 100% of the master. Most artists own a fraction of one. That's the single most valuable fact about your catalog — it makes every track instantly licensable with no permission from anyone. Protect it: never build on a sample or a loop you didn't make, or you give that away.
1 · Capture — the 60-second rule
You generate faster than you can organize. That's a good problem, but unrecorded music is gone — 14 years of it already is. New rule:
Nothing gets played twice before it gets recorded once. The moment an idea arrives: hit record. Ugly is fine. Wrong notes are fine. A phone memo is fine if Logic isn't already open. The take is not the point — the artifact is.
The Logic capture template (build this once)
Make a Logic template so starting a session takes zero decisions. Save as: File → Save as Template → CAPTURE
- Track 1: your main keys patch, record-armed, MIDI
- Track 2: audio in from the keyboard (so you get the sound AND the data)
- Tempo: 72 default · click OFF by default (you write rubato — a click kills that)
- Cycle recording ON with take folders, so every pass is kept
- A text marker at bar 1 to type the key + idea in 5 seconds
Record MIDI, always. Audio captures the performance; MIDI captures the decisions — you can change the sound, fix a note, transpose to any of your 12 keys, or re-voice it two years later. For someone whose whole system is movable shapes, MIDI is the actual asset.
2 · Naming — the system that makes 300 files findable
One convention, used every time, no exceptions. Sortable by date, searchable by key and mood.

MOOD tags to keep consistent (pick from a fixed list, don't invent new ones each time): skeleton · maj13 · planing · circle4 · gospel · 432 · 528 · sleep · melody. Consistent tags = you can find every skeleton idea in one search when Midnight Olive needs material.
3 · The pipeline — 5 stages
Most ideas should die at stage 1 or 2. That's the system working, not failing. Prolific writers need a funnel, not a to-do list.
1
SEED — raw capture. Under 2 minutes of work. Goal: exist.
2
SKETCH — has a form (A/B, intro/turnaround), a defined key, a usable take. ~30 min.
3
ARRANGED — full length, all parts, structure locked. This is where most of the work lives.
4
MIXED — balanced, EQ'd, spatial. Sounds finished on headphones AND phone speaker.
5
MASTER — loudness-targeted, exported to spec, stems bounced, metadata written. Commercially ready.
Batch by stage, not by song. Your creative mode (seeds) and your finishing mode (mix/master) use different brains. Write on Saturday, finish on Sunday. Switching constantly is why prolific people end up with 200 unfinished ideas.
5 · Own it before you release it
Do this before a single track goes public. Releasing first and registering later leaves money uncollected.
| Step | What it does | Cost |
| Join a PRO — BMI | Collects performance royalties when your music plays on radio, TV, streaming, in venues. Without this, that money is never paid to you. | $0 (songwriter) |
| (alt) ASCAP | Same function, different society. Yearly contract vs BMI's two-year. | $50 one-time |
| Publisher registration | Lets you collect the publisher's half too (you're self-published, so it's yours). Do this once there's real income. | ~$150 one-time |
| Copyright registration | copyright.gov. Not required for ownership (you own it on creation) but required to sue and to claim statutory damages. | $45–65 |
Start with BMI — it's free for songwriters. Register as a songwriter today, register each work as you finish it. That's the entire step-one and it costs nothing, which matters this year.
Copyright money-saver: you can register multiple unpublished works as a single collection in one application. Twenty tracks for one fee instead of twenty. So: accumulate finished masters, register them in batches, don't do them one at a time.
6 · Commercially ready — the per-track checklist
A track isn't done when it sounds good. It's done when it's deliverable.
- ☐ Final master exported 24-bit / 48 kHz WAV (archive quality — let distributors down-convert)
- ☐ Loudness in the streaming zone: around −14 LUFS integrated, true peak −1 dBTP
- ☐ Instrumental version exported (even if there are no vocals — sync supervisors ask by default)
- ☐ Stems bounced (see below) — this is what makes sync possible
- ☐ 30-second and 60-second edits — the two lengths ads and trailers actually use
- ☐ Metadata sheet written: title, writer (you, 100%), publisher, key, BPM, mood tags, ISRC
- ☐ Zero uncleared samples or third-party loops. Nothing you don't own.
- ☐ Registered with your PRO
Stems to bounce (all from bar 1, same length, no master-bus limiting)
01_KEYS_MAIN ← your core voicing part
02_BASS ← LH root / sub
03_MELODY_LEAD ← the line
04_PADS_ATMOS ← beds, textures
05_PERC_DRUMS ← if any
06_FX ← risers, swells, noise
07_FULL_MIX ← the master
08_INSTRUMENTAL ← full mix minus lead, if applicable
Leave headroom on stems. Bounce stems with the master-bus limiter/compressor OFF and peaks around −6 dB. A music editor needs room to rebalance. Stems that are already slammed are unusable, and that's the #1 reason indie submissions get rejected.
7 · Where the money actually is (for your kind of music)
| Path | Fit for you | Cost | Reality |
| Sync licensing | Strongest fit. Instrumental keys, ambient beds, gospel-jazz textures — this is what music libraries buy. And you own 100% of both sides, which makes you frictionless to license. | $0 upfront | Slow to land, but a single placement can pay more than a year of streaming. |
| YouTube — Midnight Olive | You already own this channel. Sleep/frequency content = long watch sessions, which YouTube rewards heavily. | $0 | Distribution you control, no gatekeeper, starts today. |
| Streaming (Spotify etc.) | Ambient/sleep performs unusually well because listeners play it for hours. Requires a distributor. | ~$20–25/yr | Per-stream pay is tiny; volume and playlist placement are everything. Defer until cash allows. |
| Direct licensing | Local podcasts, real estate video, church media, small brands. You have an existing network in two industries. | $0 | Underrated. One 10-second bed for a realtor's video tour is a real invoice. |
This year's order of operations: (1) Fix capture — free. (2) BMI as songwriter — free. (3) Build the finished-master library — free. (4) Feed Midnight Olive — free, and it's a channel you already own. (5) Paid distribution and copyright registration when the money is easier. Nothing on that list requires spending in a stabilization year.
8 · Your harmonic system — documented
Fourteen years of this lives in your hands. Written down, it's an asset — a reference for scoring, a teaching product, and the reason your music sounds like you.
| Voicing | Structure | In C | Function |
| The Major | LH root · RH maj7, 3, 5, 6, maj7 | C | B E G A B | I — Cmaj13 (no 9) |
| The Dominant | LH root · RH ♭7, 3, ♯5 | C | B♭ E G♯ | V — 7♯5, altered |
| The Minor | LH root · RH 2, ♭3, 4, ♭7 | C | D E♭ F B♭ | ii — m11 cluster |
Together those are a complete ii–V–I: Dm11 → G7♯5 → Cmaj13. One voicing per harmonic function, drilled through all twelve keys — that's a closed system, and it's why the sound is consistent no matter what you play.
Movable shapes (right hand, intervals from the bottom note)
MAJOR : 4th, m3, M2, M2 (maj7 doubled at both ends)
DOMINANT: 4th, aug4 (the ♯5 is the tension)
MINOR : m2, M2, P4 (the 2-♭3-4 rub is the sound)
Your two writing modes
- Chromatic planing — one shape slid up/down. Kills function, creates color. No gravity. Your RH shapes contain no root, which is exactly why planing works.
- Circle of 4ths — maximum functional pull, every root resolving. All gravity.
- Skeletons — bare intervals, space, melody with air. This is the Midnight Olive sound. Dense jazz harmony fails at 3 a.m.; a maj13 carries too much information and a 7♯5 has actual tension in it. Two different products, two different modes.
9 · PARKED — Live improvisation streams (Midnight Olive)
Status: later down the line. Captured here so it isn't carried in your head. Nothing to do now.
The idea: stream live improvisation over a looping visual background — the proven 24/7 ambient-radio format, but played live instead of looped audio.
Why it's stronger than it looks
- Zero marginal time cost. You already play for hours, sometimes whole weekends. This captures existing behavior instead of manufacturing new content.
- Watch time is the whole game. Sleep/ambient sessions run for hours per viewer — the metric YouTube rewards hardest.
- One stream = many assets. The live stream → the VOD → individual pieces chopped out and dropped into /01_SEEDS. Streaming feeds the release pipeline rather than competing with it.
- No post-production. No editing, no rendering, no render queue. The skill is the product.
What to check before planning around it
- YouTube live streaming requires channel verification, and mobile streaming has a subscriber threshold — confirm the MO channel qualifies before building the plan.
- Background: already solved — you build looping visuals in Flow/VEO for the other channels. A slow 4K loop is a tool you already have.
- Audio routing: Logic Pro → stream needs a virtual audio device (BlackHole is free; Loopback is paid). Test the chain before going live.
- Play skeletons, not jazz. Same rule as the MO sound — open intervals and space. A maj13 carries too much information for 3 a.m.
- Record locally while streaming so the audio asset survives independently of the platform.
