MERIDIAN SIGNING
Mobile Notary · Loan Signing Agent · Los Angeles County
✅ FBN VERIFIED CLEAR — checked Aug 4, 2026
Queried the LA County Registrar-Recorder's live Fictitious Business Name feature service directly (active filings, trailing 5 years).
| Search | Result |
| "MERIDIAN" | 41 active filings — none is Meridian Signing. Nearest in any financial space is MERIDIAN FINANCE GROUP (Santa Monica), a trade-finance/insurance firm. No notary or signing conflict. |
| "SIGNING" | 91 active signing/notary filings countywide — Meridian Signing is not among them. |
| Verdict | Clear to file. |
Competitive read: nearly every one of those 91 is either a personal name (Brown's, Victoria's, Paulette Koss) or a generic adjective (Accurate, Supreme, Precise, Premier).
"Meridian Signing" reads like a firm, not a side hustle — which is exactly the impression a title coordinator forms in the two seconds they spend scanning a name. Also notable: nothing on that list sits on the Westside near you.
✅ USPTO TRADEMARK — CLEAR (checked Aug 4, 2026)
Searched the federal trademark register directly.
No "MERIDIAN SIGNING" mark exists — not registered, not pending, not even abandoned. And across every MERIDIAN mark on the register,
not one sits in Class 045, the class covering notary and legal services.
What does live in Class 045 for signing services
| Mark | Status | Owner |
| SUNSHINE SIGNING | LIVE · Registered Mobile notary public services | Sunshine Signing Connection, Inc. (FL) |
| PRECISION SIGNING | LIVE · Registered Notary public services | Nelson Enterprise LLC (CA) |
| TRUSTED SIGNING | Dead · Cancelled | Title365 Holding Co. (CA) |
| VITAL SIGNING | Dead · Cancelled | Barber, Cory |
Those two live marks work in your favor. They prove the USPTO registers exactly this construction —
[Distinctive Word] + SIGNING — for notary services, and that nobody owns "SIGNING" on its own. It's descriptive of the service, so it carries almost no weight; the distinctive element is the first word.
MERIDIAN is nothing like PRECISION or SUNSHINE.
Verdict: clear to use, and registrable later if the business ever justifies the filing fee.
One honest limit. This is a knockout search, not a legal clearance opinion — I'm not a trademark attorney. What it establishes: no direct hit and no same-class conflict, which is what kills most names. A full clearance would also weigh common-law use and phonetic near-misses. At your stage that's the right amount of diligence; revisit it if you ever spend real money on the brand.
Two things the FBN search does NOT do.
1. An FBN is not a trademark. California's FBN registry is public notice, not name reservation — the county will happily register a name someone else already filed. It gives you no exclusive right. Trademark now checked and clear (above) — the remaining move is grabbing the domain.
2. It doesn't cover CA Secretary of State entity names — corporations and LLCs are a separate registry. Worth a look if you ever do form the entity.
The name was already decided. It's in Business_Structure.html under "DBAs — brands under the LLC," mapped to mobile notary + loan signing agent. Nothing in California notary or signing services currently operates under it, and it stays cleanly separate from DSCR Insider and The Loan Insider — which matters, because your MLO and notary roles need to read as distinct.
⚠️ DON'T FORM THE LLC YET — it costs $800/year for nothing right now
The structure plan (one holding LLC, DBAs underneath) is the right destination. The sequencing is what needs fixing.
California's AB 85 first-year franchise-tax waiver expired December 31, 2023. Any LLC formed today owes the $800 minimum franchise tax — due the 15th day of the 4th month after formation — whether it earns a dollar or not. Every year after, another $800.
File the DBA under your existing sole proprietorship instead. Same EIN (87-2481496), same name on the commission, ~$76 all in. You get the brand, the business bank account, and the platform profiles — and you defer $800/yr until there's income to justify it.
Your own plan already stages this: "CPA reviews S-corp election once net income is steady (~$40–50K+)." Form the LLC at that line, not before.
The Address Question — settled
Four things need an address and they do not want the same one. Solving them separately is cheaper and cleaner than hunting for one address that does everything.
| Use | Address | Why |
| Google Business Profile | Home — hidden | Google bans PO Boxes and mailbox-store addresses; profiles using them get hard-suspended. A Service-Area Business enters a real address for verification, then hides it. Already handled in the GBP Setup Kit. |
| Snapdocs / Amrock / NNA | Home | Platforms match jobs by distance from your address. A PO Box in the wrong ZIP mis-routes you and costs you nearby work. Not displayed publicly to borrowers. |
| Business cards | No address at all | Mobile businesses don't print one. Phone · email · "Serving Los Angeles County" · commission #. An address on a mobile notary's card reads as either a home or a mailbox — both look worse than none. |
| FBN filing | Home | The only genuinely public one — newspaper for 4 weeks, plus a queryable county database. See below. |
Why the home address on the FBN, despite it being public: it already is. The California Secretary of State publishes the
active-notary export every business day, and your commission record sits in it:
Fields, Jermaine | 574 Grand Blvd Unit 1 | Venice | CA | 90291 | 19 | 2563256 | 07/31/2030
Anyone can download that. Paying $40–90 every six months for a PO Box to keep the same address off the county FBN database closes one door while the state leaves another wide open.
Save the money.
If address privacy ever becomes a real priority it is a
separate, bigger project — a change of address with the SOS (certified mail, within 30 days, Gov. Code §8213.5)
and a refiled FBN. Do it deliberately or not at all; a PO Box on the FBN alone buys nothing.
AB 878 still helps you. The statute lets you list a business mailing address instead of a residence address — so if you ever do get a box, the FBN can carry it without disturbing anything else. The option stays open; you're just not paying for it today.
Step 1 — File the DBA with LA County
Sole proprietors file all the time — you're the default case. The county's "Who Can File" line reads: "Persons doing business for profit under a fictitious name (does not include surname in company name)." Corporations and LLCs carry an extra requirement you don't — a Secretary of State good-standing printout. The requirements page reads entity-heavy because entities need more paperwork, not because individuals are excluded.
And that parenthetical is why you need an FBN at all: "Meridian Signing" doesn't contain "Fields," so the filing is required. If you traded as "Fields Notary" you could skip it.
⚠️ FILE ONLINE — the in-person route can't happen Monday
I had this wrong. You cannot walk up to the Norwalk counter and file an FBN. The county requires you to complete the Online Business Filing and Registration System first, get a confirmation number, and only then book an appointment — and appointments run up to three weeks out. That won't line up with Aug 10.
Just file the whole thing online. Proof of identity, signature, and payment all happen in the portal, and the filed FBN comes back by email. No separate notarized affidavit, no appointment, no second trip to Norwalk. The $10.75 service fee buys back a trip across the county and a notarization — take it.
| Route | Cost | Reality |
| Online ⭐ | $36.75 $26 + $10.75 | Identity, signature, payment all in-portal. Filing returned by email. Do this. |
| In person | $26 | Requires online pre-registration + confirmation number + an appointment booked up to 3 weeks out. Saves $10.75, costs a trip. |
| Mail | $26 | Norwalk HQ, P.O. Box 1208, Norwalk CA 90651-1208. Needs the notarized Affidavit of Identity. Slowest. |
New rule worth knowing — AB 878 / SB 1526, effective Jan 1, 2024. Registrants must now list a business mailing address instead of a residence address. Your FBN gets published in a newspaper for four weeks, so this is the difference between your Venice apartment appearing in a public legal notice or not. Same privacy logic you'll want on the Google Business Profile.

Step 2 — E&O first, then platforms
Buy E&O once, at the right tier. Most signing services require ≥$25,000; some require $100,000. Buying $15K to save money means buying again in a month.
McGlone pricing: $25K = $70 · $100K = $170 (4-year terms). $100K is the tier that opens every door. At $100 more across four years — $25/year — it's the cheapest constraint you'll ever remove from this business.
E&O protects you. The $15,000 bond protects the public and does nothing for you if you make an honest mistake on a signing.
Step 3 — Platform profiles, in this order
| Platform | Cost | Why / order |
| Snapdocs | Free | Do this first. Largest volume; most LA title companies route through it. "Snapdocs Verified" needs 5 items: commission, bond, background check, E&O, verified ID. NNA certification is NOT required. |
| Free directories | Free | 123Notary · NotaryCafe · Notary Rotary. Zero cost, makes you findable while the paid pieces process. |
| NNA / SigningAgent.com | ~$65–100/yr | NNA certification + background screening is the baseline many signing services require even though Snapdocs doesn't. Buy after Snapdocs is live and producing. |
| Signing Order | Free | Another major national platform. Add once the first two are running. |
| Amrock | Free | High volume, tighter vetting. Apply once you have completed signings to point at. |
Sequence matters because of money, not effort. Snapdocs and the free directories cost nothing and can produce work immediately. NNA is the only real spend — let Snapdocs prove the pipeline before you pay for certification.

The availability line is your real edge. You're already up at 2am and running routes before dawn. Most signing agents quietly decline the 7pm Friday and the Sunday morning — those are the jobs that build a reputation with a scheduler fastest, because you solved a problem nobody else would take.
Compliance guardrails — memorize these three
1. Never "notario público" — not even once. Under Gov. Code §8219.5, a violation means a minimum one-year suspension, and permanent revocation on a second offense. In Latin America a notario is an attorney, so the translation claims authority you don't have. Say "notary public" in every language.
2. Advertising in Spanish triggers a posting requirement. If you advertise notary services in any language other than English — signs, flyers, website, social — you must post, in English and that language, a statement that you are not an attorney and cannot give legal advice, plus the statutory fee schedule. The only exception is a single desk plaque.
3. You cannot notarize a loan you originated. A notary with a financial interest in the transaction is disqualified. The MLO background is a credibility asset at the table — it is not a both-hats-on-one-file play. Keep Meridian Signing and your NEXA work visibly separate.
